A special piece of Cloughie memorabilia has been sold for £870 in an on-line auction.
The double-sided banner was specially made for Nottingham City Council and was hung outside the city’s Council House for a civic tribute which was broadcast worldwide. It features a picture of Cloughie alongside one of his famous quotes.
The quote was in response to a reporter's question about how the Great Man handled players who disagreed with him. In typical Clough style, he replied: "We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right."
The successful bidder has been offered the opportunity of having the banner presented to them pitch-side at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground before a home match (on a mutually convenient date). They will also be offered two match tickets for the game, courtesy of Nottingham Forest.
The proceeds of the auction will go to the Brian Clough Statue Fund in Nottingham which aims to raise £60,000 for a statue of Cloughie in a prominent location in Nottingham city centre. The banner has been kindly donated to the fund’s committee by the city council, which supports and administers the fund.
The chairman of the fund's committee, Paul Ellis, said the banner was a special tribute to a remarkable man. “The quote is brilliant and you can't help but smile when you read it. Cloughie did things his way -- and we'll never forget the success he brought to Nottingham and Nottinghamshire during his 18 years at Forest."
The ten day auction on eBay opened at 0600 on Friday February 24th, 2006.
