TO STATUE FUND
Three of Brian Clough's greatest ever players have backed a campaign to
raise money for a statue of the Master Manager.
John Robertson, John McGovern and Neil Webb appeared at a 'Forest
Legends' evening at Nottingham nightspot Cabaret (March 16th, 2006) - and all three of them made
donations to a collection held at the venue for the Brian Clough Statue
Fund.
McGovern, Robertson and Webb played for Nottingham Forest under Clough's
management in the 1970s and 1980s and are pictured (left to right) with statue fund volunteer Julie Lishman. The three former players paid tribute to the Master Manager.
"Along with Robin Hood, Brian Clough is definitely Nottingham's most famous
son," said Robertson, who scored the vital goal that gave Forest their second
European triumph in 1980. "He deserves a statue for what he achieved for the
city. The man is an absolute legend."
"The plans for a statue are very apt," added Webb. "He took Nottingham
Forest from the second tier of English football and turned them into
European Champions, so he fully deserves the recognition. He had an amazing
knack of signing average players and turning them into world beaters. A lot
of players owe him a huge debt - I know I certainly do."
The statue bid also received the continued backing of McGovern, who captained the
successful Forest team of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and also played
under the management of Clough at Hartlepool, Derby and Leeds. "Brian Clough
brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people over along period of time," he
said.
The collection held at Cabaret raised over £200 for the statue fund. The campaign was launched in June 2005 with the
aim of raising £60,000 for a lasting memorial to Clough, to be located in a
prominent location in Nottingham city centre.
