On-line auction launched for Cloughie banner

Although England's World Cup campaign was over for another four years, back in the summer of 2006 football fans were offered the chance to own a rare piece of memorabilia celebrating the best manager England never had - Brian Clough.

A huge banner featuring Cloughie's comments about being overlooked for the England job was auctioned on the internet for £770. The proceeds went to the Brian Clough Statue Fund in Nottingham.

The double-sided banner was specially made for Nottingham City Council and was hung outside the city’s Council House for the Memorial Service in 2004. It featured a picture of the Great Man, alongside his quote.

The quote reads: "I'm sure the England selectors thought if they took me on and gave me the job, I'd want to run the show. They were shrewd because that's exactly what I would have done."

This special piece of Clough memorabilia is one of the larger banners that were displayed and measures nearly six-feet high. It is the only banner of this size with this quote. The chairman of the Brian Clough Statue Fund in Nottingham, Paul Ellis, said at the time that this was one of the last few remaining banners to be auctioned.

"Like the other banners which have featured famous quotes, this one is sure to be much sought-after by football fans," said Paul. "Cloughie was the people's choice for England manager in the late Seventies and I'm sure we'd have won the World Cup with him in charge. Having said that, we will always be indebted to him for what he achieved at Forest and the success he brought to the city. England's loss was certainly Nottinghamshire's gain!"

The auction on ebay started on Friday 30th, June 2006, and lasted ten days.
