Sculptors are asked for their bids...
(Archive Report 2006)
Sculptors are being invited to submit their bids to make the statue of Brian Clough which will stand in Nottingham city centre. The process of selecting a sculptor is being launched as fund-raisers close-in on their target for the statue.
The committee of the Brian Clough Statue Fund is now keen to receive ideas from sculptors of what type of statue they would make if they were commissioned. During this initial stage, they will be asked to provide various information, including the style and pose of the statue and costings. Some artists have already contacted the fund and will be sent letters explaining what information is required, but the committee is also keen to hear from other sculptors who haven't been in touch before.
The fund's chairman Paul Ellis said the committee would be looking for designs which reflected a life-like image of Cloughie during his inspirational reign at Nottingham Forest.
"This will be a very exciting project and a high-profile commission, so it's vital we have the right sculptor," said Paul. "Once we have received the ideas, designs and costings, we can then sit down with the city council to move the process forward. Brian Clough's family have given their full backing to our fund-raising efforts and the plans for a statue and we look forward to them being involved in the selection process."
The city council is administering the fund and the authority's leader, Councillor Jon Collins, said he was delighted with the progress made by the fund-raisers.
"To raise over £50,000 in less than 18 months shows what a tremendous effort the volunteers have made and just how well supported their fund-raising work has been," said Councillor Collins. "It also demonstrates what a remarkable man Brian Clough was and how important it will be to have a statue of him in the city centre. I have fully supported the fund from the beginning and am very pleased the committee is now in a position to move forward and invite ideas from sculptors."
Sculptors will have until December 1st, 2006, to submit their initial ideas. With further fund-raising currently the main objective, the statue fund committee will meet early in the New Year to look at the design proposals. A final selection of statue designs will be published on this website next year, as well as being put on display at the Council House, so fans will be able to give their views too. Sculptors should send their initial ideas to Paul J Ellis, PKF, Accountants & Business Advisers, Regent House, Clinton Avenue, Nottingham, NG5 1AZ.
The location of the statue has still to be decided, but it has been agreed it will be in a prominent place in the city centre, in recognition of the immense success Brian Clough brought to the city. As well as the city council and the Clough family, the statue fund has the backing of Nottingham Forest and the supporters club.
